Iraqi Stateside Votes

Iraqi native Kafi Ahmed took an 18-hour bus ride from Syracuse to Michigan last weekend to register to vote in Iraq's first independent election in nearly 50 years.

Ahmed, who fled Iraq in 1995, is among thousands of Iraqis traveling to one of the five U.S. cities where they can participate in overseas balloting. Voting is being conducted in Detroit; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Irvine, Ca.; and Nashville, Tenn.

About 240,000 Iraqis in the U.S. are eligible to vote in the country's Jan. 30 election.
